Hassan Abbas is writing a book about Islam’s internal struggles and spirituality as observed during his travels to sacred Muslim sites and shrines. The basic premise of the book revolves around the idea that the war within Islam is manifested through seemingly unending sequences of violent acts, conflicts, and battles across the Muslim world, a trend, that he argues, is not new as the internal battles of Islam shaped its political trajectory from early times.
He aspires to unfold this narrative through the lens of his travels to historical and sacred Islamic sites to nine countries that include Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Jordan, Pakistan, and India during the last two decades.
Hassan will share findings drawn from these explorations explaining the culture, politics, and opinions of those who are engaged in major debates in Muslim communities.
